Prepare your child to begin their new Reception class

We will update this page with activity suggestions and links to resources which will help you to prepare your child for joining us in September 2025.

We have uploaded three suggestions to begin with and will gradually increase this over the weeks and months before your child joins their new class.

1. Sing nursery rhymes with your child. Lots of examples are available here
2. Make some play dough creations together. Instructions for making your own play dough can be found here
3. Encourage sharing and turn taking by playing board games inside, ball games in the garden or taking turns whilst cooking or playing with toys.

If you have any questions at all, or if there is anything that you would like to discuss with us about your child’s specific needs or concerns about starting school, please do not hesitate to contact the school; the relevant member of staff will then get back to you as soon as possible.

Mid-year admissions

If you would like to apply for a place outside the normal admissions round, you will need to complete a mid-year application form through the Local Authority’s admissions website. Once submitted, the school will contact you to confirm the outcome and, where possible, arrange a tour of the school. Please note that waiting lists for mid-year admissions are ranked based on the over subscription criteria.

Admissions appeals

If your application for a place is unsuccessful, you have the right to appeal the decision. Appeals should be submitted in writing within 20 school days of receiving the refusal notice. Appeals will be heard by an independent panel, and you will have the opportunity to present your case.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the routine on arrival?
Children can arrive at school from 8.35am. Please bring them round to the Early Years classrooms via the playground at 8.35am and the children will begin their day of learning from 8:45am. A member of the Early Years’ Team will be at the gate waiting to welcome all of the children as they arrive. Whilst your child is getting used to the new routines of school, you are more than welcome to come into the classroom with them at the beginning of the day for their first week in school. We will let you know when it is time for the children to come to the carpet and and for parents and carers to leave.
What equipment will my child need to bring to school?
What sort of things will my child be doing at school?
The school day starts at 8:45am and finishes at 3:15pm Monday to Friday. During the week children will have phonics lessons with a member of the Early Years Team, complete some small group maths and writing activities and have several opportunities to learn in the indoor and outdoor environments. Children are also given opportunities during the day where they can explore their own interests, socialise with their peers and develop independent skills.
How is Reading/Writing/Maths taught?
In Reception we follow our school curriculum and tailor our teaching to support the individual needs of each pupil. At Brockworth Primary Academy, we recognise the importance of children learning to be confident and independent, which is built from secure relationships. Teachers and support staff aim to read one-to-one with every child each week. We teach phonics daily in small groups and following a short writing or maths input from the class teacher, we have lots of activities, both inside and out, for the children to develop and practise their new skills in different contexts. Children are able to work with the adults within the indoor and outdoor learning environment to extend and embed their learning even further.
Will my child go on school trips?
What will happen at lunchtime?
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 all receive free school meals. We encourage all children to enjoy lunch in school. We provide a choice of hot, healthy and nutritious lunches every day.
Your child will eat their dinner in the main dining hall. The Early Years children eat at a slightly earlier time than the older children in school. They will be supported by a member of the Early Years Team and are also encouraged to build their independence.
After they have eaten their lunch, the children will go outside to play on the school playground. During this time, they will be able to meet and play with children from other year groups.

Will my child go outside?
We have an outside space for reception pupils that your child will be able to access every day. To ensure that children can go outside, regardless of the weather conditions, we ask parents/carers to make sure that children are sent with suitable clothing to allow this to happen. As well as lunchtime outside, children will be able to go outside during choosing time and also for small group activities.
Do children need to bring a snack to school?
All children will be provided with free daily fruit whilst in Reception. Children are also entitled to milk daily until they reach the age of 5 years old, when parents can choose to pay for milk if they wish. There will also be water available at all times for the children, however, some children prefer to bring in their own water bottle from home.
There is no need for them to bring any other snacks into school.

What is the school uniform and where can I buy it from?
What should I do if my child is ill?
Any absence requires a telephone call / conversation with the office staff explaining why on every day of absence. A note should be provided upon your child’s return. Please note that following a case of diarrhoea or sickness your child is not permitted to return to school until they are clear of symptoms for 48 hours.

What if my child needs medicine during the school day?

We cannot accept medicines in the classroom. You will need to fill in a form which is available at the school office and the team will be happy to help. We are only able to administer current medicines prescribed by a doctor and clearly labelled with your child’s name. If your child needs an inhaler, please provide one that can be kept in school. You will be asked to fill in a form so that your child can be added to our asthma register.
What is expected of me as a parent?
We encourage parents to take an active role in their child’s school life. This will include;
- reading at home
- attending parent workshops (where possible)
- attending parents evening
- keeping school up to date with any changes in circumstance
- most importantly making sure your child is prepared for the school day e.g. having a good sleep, eating a healthy breakfast.
What if I need to collect my child early for an appointment / we are late coming into school one morning?
Please inform the office if you need to collect your child from school early for an appointment - wherever possible we ask to see an appointment card / letter. On the day of the appointment please go to the office and someone will collect your child for you. If you are late for school one morning you will need to come to the school office - rather than going directly to the classrooms - as your child will need to be marked as present on the register. They will then be taken to class by the office staff.
